The Lagos police command says it has commenced an investigation into a viral video showing officers manhandling Mercy Attababa, a female student of Lagos State University (LASU), while attempting to arrest her.
In a video posted on Facebook by Obi Franklin, some men, including armed police officers, were seen trying to force the student into a vehicle.
The police officers in the video are attached to the Zone 2 command in Lagos.
In a statement on Saturday, Ayuba Umma, spokesperson of Zone 2, said the police received a petition from Emeka Okoye against the female student and others over allegations of assault and threat to his life.
Umma said the officers involved in the incident have been identified, and appropriate actions will be taken against them.
âThe petitioner (Emeka Okoye) asserted that a group of armed individuals, suspected to be cult members, invaded his residence on 13th and 14th July 2025, issuing threats against him and his family, which compelled him to relocate for their safety,â he said.
âFollowing an inquiry and the collection of her statement, Ms. Mercy Attababa was released to the Lagos State University Student Union Government Welfare Director.
âThe AIG has directed that the case be transferred to the commissioner of police for comprehensive investigation and subsequent reporting.â
Okoye, the petitioner, is the landlord of the LASU student.
