Presidency Denies Tinubu Stopped 5-Year Visa For U.S. Citizens

The Nigerian government has denied reports that President Bola Tinubu has halted the issuance of five-year multiple-entry visas to United States citizens, insisting that no such directive has been given.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, the Presidency described the claims as misinformation and clarified that the long-standing visa arrangement between Nigeria and the U.S. remains in effect.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has never stopped issuing five-year multiple-entry visas for U.S. citizens,” the statement said. “This continues in line with existing bilateral agreements and the principle of reciprocity.”

Onanuga stated that shortly after assuming office, President Tinubu directed all federal agencies to uphold Nigeria’s international agreements and maintain reciprocal diplomatic policies.

He noted that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had previously clarified Nigeria’s position following the U.S. government’s recent adjustment of its non-immigrant visa policy towards Nigerians.

The U.S. government recently announced a change in its visa issuance practice for Nigerian nationals, attributing the decision to the principle of reciprocity. However, the Nigerian government argues that this claim does not reflect the true state of affairs.

“We want to reiterate that the U.S. government’s claim of reciprocity does not accurately reflect the actual situation,” the Presidency stated. “Nigeria continues to grant U.S. citizens five-year multiple-entry visas.”

Addressing confusion around Nigeria’s new visa policy, the statement explained that the 90-day single-entry validity period applies only to a newly introduced e-Visa category designed for short-term visitors, particularly tourists and business travelers seeking faster processing without going through embassy channels.

“The e-Visa replaces the former visa-on-arrival system, which had become inefficient and prone to abuse,” the Presidency said. “It is an entirely online process with approvals typically issued within 48 hours.”

The statement added that while Nigeria now offers e-Visas to U.S. citizens and several other nationalities, the United States does not currently extend the same privilege to Nigerians.

Despite this, the Tinubu administration said it remains committed to engaging with the U.S. on the matter.

“In the spirit of cooperation and mutual respect that defines Nigeria-U.S. relations, the government will continue to dialogue with American officials to resolve any issues arising from these policy changes,” Onanuga stated.
