Taiwan Seeks Improved Ties With Nigeria, Hails Tinubu’s Caribbean Diplomacy

Taiwan has expressed its desire to strengthen diplomatic ties with Nigeria, lauding President Bola Tinubu’s recent state visit to Saint Lucia as a landmark step in expanding Nigeria’s global engagements.

Taiwan’s Representative and Head of Mission in Nigeria, Andy Yih-Ping Liu, commended Tinubu’s outreach to the Caribbean nation, describing it as visionary and comparable to Taiwan’s longstanding diplomatic relationships in the region.

“We, the people and Government of Taiwan, wholeheartedly congratulate President Tinubu for his vision and concrete actions in extending Nigeria’s connection with the Caribbean island state, just as Taiwan has done diplomatically with Saint Lucia,” Liu said.

He noted that Taiwan maintains full diplomatic relations with Saint Lucia and three other Caribbean nations — St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Haiti — with embassies actively engaged in bilateral cooperation.

“Our diplomatic presence, supported by robust development and technical assistance in areas such as healthcare, agriculture, youth and women empowerment, trade, and sustainable development, has significantly contributed to the growth and well-being of our Caribbean partners,” he said.

Liu expressed confidence that President Tinubu, during his visit, witnessed some of the developmental facilities jointly built by Taiwan and Saint Lucia. “We are proud to have played a role in such impactful initiatives and would wholeheartedly welcome Nigeria into similar humanitarian and economic collaborations in the Caribbean,” he added.

Celebrating the recognition bestowed on the Nigerian president, Liu said, “We are extremely delighted to witness His Excellency President Tinubu graciously receiving the Knight Commander of the Order of Saint Lucia (K.C.O.S.L.), which underscores his commitment to fostering ties between Africa and the Caribbean. This honour reflects President Tinubu’s forward-looking diplomacy and his drive to deepen Nigeria’s relations with the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS).”

Liu also highlighted recent high-level engagements between Taiwan and Saint Lucia, noting that Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre, who hosted President Tinubu, attended the inauguration of Taiwan’s President Ching-Te Lai on May 20, 2024. Similarly, Saint Lucia’s Senate President, Madam Alvina Reynolds, also part of Tinubu’s meetings, attended Taiwan’s National Day celebrations on October 10, 2024.

“These exchanges speak to the depth and warmth of Taiwan-Saint Lucia relations, and show that Taiwan remains an indispensable, reliable partner for Caribbean nations,” Liu said.

Touching on Taiwan’s global standing, he added, “Despite pressure from across the Taiwan Strait, Taiwan continues to thrive both democratically and economically. We are proud of our journey and eager to share our advanced technological know-how with partners around the world.”

He reiterated Taiwan’s openness to collaboration with Nigeria, either bilaterally or through shared allies such as Saint Lucia and other Caribbean nations. “We stand ready to share our expertise across diverse fields where we have comparative advantages. We sincerely hope President Tinubu and the Nigerian government will view Taiwan as a healthy, advanced, and strategic partner, just as we’ve proven to be in Saint Lucia,” Liu said.
