‘President Where? Your Time Has Passed’, Wike Blasts Obi

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has launched a scathing criticism of former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, accusing him of democratic double standards and declaring that his time in Nigerian politics has come and gone.

Speaking during a thanksgiving service held in Abuja on Sunday, Wike questioned the democratic credentials of Obi, particularly his alleged refusal to conduct local government elections throughout his eight-year tenure as governor of Anambra State.

โ€œSome of you said Peter Obi will be president. President where?โ€ Wike asked pointedly, drawing murmurs from the congregation.

โ€œYou donโ€™t know somebody; you just act out of emotion,โ€ he said.

Wike, who served two terms as governor of Rivers State, said Obiโ€™s failure to conduct local government elections while in office undermined the very democratic principles he now claims to defend.

โ€œFor eight years he was governor, he never conducted local government elections,โ€ Wike stated.

โ€œAnd Nigerians were not angry, and were happy. You refuse to conduct LG elections eight good years. That is not democracy. Only youโ€”governor for all the LGs.โ€

He further accused Obi of hypocrisy, suggesting that his recent criticisms of Nigeriaโ€™s democratic system stem from his exclusion from power rather than genuine concern for governance.

โ€œHeโ€™s now saying that democracy is no longer working in Nigeria because heโ€™s no longer in power,โ€ Wike said.

โ€œBut when he was governor of Anambra, democracy was working. It worked under you in Anambraโ€”your state alone. To be chairman of LG, to be governor, only one man.โ€

The minister dismissed any suggestion of a political comeback for Obi, saying flatly: โ€œThe time has passed and you wonโ€™t have the opportunity again.โ€

Wikeโ€™s comments come amid rising political tensions and debates about the state of democracy in Nigeria, particularly following the 2023 general elections and mounting concerns about governance, accountability, and inclusion.
