Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has declared the newly formed opposition coalition a failure, citing his exclusion as a primary indication of its impending collapse.
Wike, a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) currently serving under the APC-led federal government, made the comments during a televised media chat on Thursday.
He questioned the strength and relevance of the opposition alliance, insisting that those behind it had already been in power and failed to deliver results for Nigerians.
He also responded to suggestions that President Bola Tinubu may feel threatened by the alliance of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi.
Wike appeared to downplay their political relevance and rejected comparisons with them, implying that he holds greater influence.
According to him, the coalition is made up of individuals who previously held power as governors, ministers, and legislators but failed to address the country’s problems during their time in office. He argued that their current unity is driven more by personal ambition than national interest.
Wike did not clarify whether he would support Tinubu in 2027 if the PDP zones the presidential ticket to the South, saying only that such a decision would be made “when the time comes.”
His comments came a day after the formal adoption of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as the political platform for the 2027 opposition coalition.
The event, held at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja, marked the official launch of the alliance.
As part of the transition, the entire ADC leadership resigned, paving the way for the coalition to take control of the party.
Former Senate President David Mark was named Interim National Chairman, while former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola was appointed Interim National Secretary.
In attendance were opposition figures including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, and former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi.
Others included former APC National Chairman John Oyegun; Senators Ireti Kingibe and Victor Umeh; Solomon Dalung, Dele Momodu, Dino Melaye, Emeka Ihedioha, and Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar (retd.).
Representatives from the PDP, Labour Party, Social Democratic Party (SDP), and other opposition blocs were also present.
