Portugal Beat Spain In Tense Penalty Showdown To Clinch Nations League Trophy

Portugal have lifted the UEFA Nations League trophy for the second time after a dramatic 5-3 penalty shootout victory over Spain.

This follows a 2-2 draw at full-time and extra-time in a thrilling final held in Germany.

The match, fiercely contested from start to finish, saw both teams create significant chances before settling matters from the spot.

Portugal were flawless in the shootout, converting all five of their penalties, while Spain faltered, missing one of their four attempts.

Spain struck first in the 21st minute through Martin Zubimendi, who capitalised on a rebound to fire past Diogo Costa.

Portugal responded just five minutes later, as Nuno Mendes embarked on a dazzling solo run and buried his finish into the bottom right corner. The goal stood after a brief VAR check for offside in the build-up.

Spain regained the lead on the brink of half-time when Mikel Oyarzabal slotted home a precise ball from Pedri. Another VAR review followed due to a possible foul in the build-up, but the goal was upheld.

Portugal had a goal disallowed early in the second half after Bruno Fernandes was judged offside.

However, Cristiano Ronaldo levelled the score in the 61st minute, seizing on a loose ball in the box and calmly finding the net to make it 2-2.

Both sides had chances late on and into extra time. Nelson Semedo narrowly missed the target, while Portugal also saw a strong penalty appeal waved away after Nuno Mendes went down under pressure. Referee Sandro Scharer declined to consult VAR, and play continued.

With neither team able to break the deadlock in extra time, penalties decided the final. Portugal held their nerve, converting all five kicks, while Spain faltered once—enough to hand the trophy to the Portuguese side once more.

This victory marks another international triumph for Portugal, adding to their 2019 UEFA Nations League title and further cementing their status among Europe’s elite footballing nations.
