The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) and the National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS) have rescinded their decision to demand the resignation of Farouk Ahmed, the CEO of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA).
Earlier, the leadership of the two student associations accused Ahmed of mismanaging public funds, racketeering in jobs and contracts, and abuse of office.
The unions threatened to mobilise students nationwide to protest against the NMDPRA management.
NANS said its protest would be held between June 4 and 5, with a visit to the NMDPRA headquarters, while NAPS scheduled its demonstration for June 12, 2025.
However, in a statement on Friday, the union withdrew their demands and protest notices.
Opeyemi Ajasa, NANS PRO, apologised for any inconvenience caused by their decision, saying they received unverified information concerning the allegations.
NANS said it is committed to working with Ahmed to establish a relationship between the youth and the agency.
“We have discovered that the issues raised in our earlier correspondence are unfounded, misleading, and do not accurately reflect the true state of affairs within the agency,” the statement reads.
“We wish to reaffirm our readiness to collaborate with Engr. Farouk Ahmed and the NMDPRA to bridge the communication gap between the youth and student constituency and the agency.
“We understand that our earlier letter was based on incomplete information, and we regret any harm it may have caused.
“We are committed to working with the NMDPRA leadership to ensure that our concerns are addressed constructively and peacefully.
“We believe that dialogue and cooperation are essential in resolving issues, and we are willing to work with the NMDPRA leadership to achieve this goal.”
Similarly, NAPS withdrew its protest notice in a letter dated May 3, 2025, signed by Comr. Eshiofune Paul Oghayan.
On its part, NAPS stressed the need for constructive dialogue and responsible engagement with the NMDPRA leadership rather than resorting to protests.
On April 2, President Bola Tinubu made changes to the board of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited.
Tinubu appointed Bayo Ojulari as the NNPC group chief executive officer (GCEO) to replace Kyari, while Ahmadu Musa Kida was named the company’s non-executive chairman, replacing Pius Akinyelure.
On April 23, Wale Edun, the minister of finance and coordinating minister of the economy, said a forensic audit of the NNPC was underway.
Last month, the Concerned Lawyers and Civil Society in Defence of Public Trust, a civil society organisation (CSO), demanded Ahmed’s resignation.
