It is rightly said, “You can’t eat your cake and have it too.”
The recent “My party, my PDP” statement by former Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, reeks of selective amnesia and political opportunism. This is coming from a man who, alongside his long-time political ally Atiku Abubakar, played a significant role in destabilizing and eventually abandoning the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) during one of its most critical periods.
Let’s not forget history.
Bukola Saraki and Atiku Abubakar were instrumental in the infamous exodus of top PDP members to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the lead-up to the 2015 general elections.
It is pertinent to know that their defection wasn’t just symbolic, it was strategic, well-planned, and extremely damaging. They used the platform, influence, and resources they gained from PDP to empower the very opposition that brought the party to its knees.
These were not minor figures. Saraki, having served as a PDP governor and later Senate President under PDP, and Atiku, a former two-term PDP Vice President, both had deep roots and massive influence within the party. Yet, when it suited their ambitions, they turned their backs on the PDP and empowered a coalition that eventually plunged Nigeria into years of hardship under APC governance.
Their actions contributed significantly to the PDP’s loss of credibility and electoral strength. Nigerians will never forget the hardships, economic collapse, insecurity, job losses, and deep national division that followed the APC’s rise to power, which their defection helped bring about.
So when Saraki now says “My party, my PDP,” it is not only ironic, it is an insult to the memory of loyal party members and Nigerians who have suffered due to the consequences of that betrayal.
The PDP may have its flaws, but those who weakened it when it mattered most should at least have the humility to admit their role, not pose as loyalists when it’s politically convenient.
