Shaping Minds, Shifting Nations: Irekandu Marks Birthday With New Gen Leaders 3.0

The lawmaker representing Obokun State Constituency, Hon. Adewumi Adeyemi, has urged his mentees under the auspices of the New Gen Leaders initiative to become leaders with a shaping mindset in order to achieve a shaped nation.

Hon. Adewumi Adeyemi IREKANDU made this statement while delivering his keynote address on the topic, “Shaping Leaders, Shifting Nations” at the New Gen Leaders 3.0 Summit, held to mark his birthday on the 27th of April, 2025.

The New Gen Leader is a mentor-mentee leadership initiative of Hon. Adewumi Adeyemi IREKANDU, which commenced on his 40th birthday, April 27, 2024. The initiative aims to raise a new generation of leaders committed to setting the nation on a brighter path toward sustainable nation-building.

This quarter’s edition—the third in the series—is themed “Mindshift.” The April 2025 Special Edition brought together about 100 carefully selected participants, all driven by a shared hunger for growth and transformation. One participant remarked, “I came all the way from Ilorin, and it was worth it.”

This edition seamlessly fused leadership mentoring with entrepreneurship, empowering young people not just to aspire—but to build and thrive.

Speaking during an interview, the convener, Hon. Irekandu, stated that his motivation for initiating the mentor-mentee platform is to develop leaders who share his vision and mindset.

In a statement released by the lawmaker, Hon. Adewumi Adeyemi IREKANDU said:

“Over a decade after handing over as Students’ Union President in 2008, I stepped into governance—not for the title, but because the same conviction that once moved me to serve as a student leader now called me to serve my people on a larger scale. That drive continues to shape my journey today.”

“But here’s what I’ve learned along the way: Leadership remains Nigeria’s deepest challenge—and our greatest opportunity.

“Leadership dictates direction. Where we are today as a nation is the result of one kind of leadership. But where we go from here—especially toward a Nigeria we can all be proud of—will depend on a different kind entirely. That’s why, over the years, I have committed myself not just to public service, but to raising leaders. Visionary minds. Purpose-driven individuals. Men and women who will not only talk change but lead it.”

He further emphasized that the New Gen Leader Initiative evolved from the Adewumi Adeyemi Mentoring Class.

Meanwhile, Mrs. Ganiyat of Abebi Foods stirred the entrepreneurial minds at the event with insights on leveraging artificial intelligence and the power of social media in business. She shared her inspiring journey into the logistics sector, revealing that she learned everything she needed from YouTube before venturing out to partner with logistics professionals and companies for her export business.

Also speaking was Ms. Ololade of Lade Nigeria, a thriving shoe label entrepreneur based in Osun State. She shared how her business evolved from a simple idea to a recognized brand beyond the Southwest, affirming that “consistency is the backbone of every entrepreneur.”

During the panel session, the “Three Musketeers”—Hon. Adewumi Adeyemi IREKANDU, Hon. Omishore Banks, and Hon. Azeez—shared their political journeys, focusing on their impact in Osun State. Highlighting the Osun Creatives Conference held in January, which convened over 1,000 creatives for a three-day event, they noted how the conference propelled Osun into global relevance in terms of SDG goals, innovation, and entrepreneurship.

Earlier in the day, a business pitch session featured two male entrepreneurs and one female entrepreneur. The session ended with one male and one female emerging as winners. They are to receive funding and essential business equipment to support their ventures.

The event was graced by notable figures across entrepreneurship, politics, and the economy in Osun State, including Mrs. Ganiyat of Abebi Foods, Mrs. Adedayo Adeyemi of Delightsome Stores, Ms. Ololade of Lade Nigeria, Mr. Banks Omishore (SSA to the Governor on SDGs), and Mr. Azeez (SSA to the Governor on Digital Economy).

Your passion is the reason we continue to build. This is how we shape the Nigeria we deserve—one leader, one platform, one defining moment at a time.

“The work is far from over, but each step forward strengthens the foundation. We’re not just inspiring hope—we’re building capacity. We’re not just hosting events—we’re raising a movement. And we’re not waiting for the future to happen—we’re leading it into being.

Because when leadership works, everything else can too”. He added.
