Kano’s Peace At Stake: A Plea To Ban Eid Celebrations By All Emirs || By Barma Muhammad Yahaya

Your Excellency, the Executive Governor of Kano State, esteemed stakeholders, and security agencies,

On behalf of millions of Kano residents, I am writing to express our deep concern regarding the escalating traditional leadership crisis in Kano, which has led to the emergence of two rival kings: His Highness Muhammad Sanusi II and Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero. The situation is alarming, particularly as both kings are preparing for parallel Eid celebrations. Such circumstances could ignite violent confrontations and destabilize the state. History has shown that gatherings like these can quickly turn violent, leading to the destruction of property, loss of lives, and chaos.

For instance, during the nationwide protests in August 2024, Kano experienced massive looting and violence, resulting in billions of naira and property damage, loss of lives, and devastation to businesses.

As a proud citizen of Kano, I urge you to prioritize the peace and unity of our beloved state above political interests. Given the sensitivity of the current situation, I strongly appeal to the Governor, security agencies, and stakeholders to consider banning any Eid festival celebrations by both Emirs until a final court judgment is delivered. This precautionary measure can help prevent chaos, destruction, and further loss of lives and property.

In light of the potential risks, I implore the Governor to prioritize the safety and well-being of Kanawan Dabo. The consequences of inaction could be devastating, and we must take proactive steps to maintain peace and order.

I also call upon both Emirs, His Highness Muhammad Sanusi II and Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, to put their love for Kano above their individual interests. As they both claim roots in Kano, I urge them to refrain from participating in the Eid festival and to prioritize the maintenance of peace and unity.

I appeal to the revered Kano Elders to break their silence and offer wisdom and guidance to help navigate the ongoing traditional leadership crisis. As custodians of Kano’s rich cultural heritage, their voices carry significant weight, and their counsel is crucial during these turbulent times.

To the residents of Kano, particularly the supporters of the rival emirs, I ask you to prioritize peace and unity over partisan interests. Refrain from inciting violence or spreading inflammatory rhetoric. Instead, let us work together to create a conducive environment. Remember, our shared identity as Kanawas transcends our differences, and our collective prosperity depends on our ability to coexist harmoniously.

Let us draw inspiration from the wisdom and leadership of our late grandfather, Alhaji Ado Bayero, who was a symbol of peace and unity in Kano. May his gentle soul rest in peace, Ameen. We should honor our rich cultural heritage and the wisdom of our forebears by choosing the path of peace, tolerance, and understanding.
