An Ogun State High Court sitting in Abeokuta has sentenced three individuals to death by hanging for the brutal murder of a couple, Kehinde and Bukola Fatinoye, and their son, Oreoluwa, on New Year’s Day two years ago.
The convicts; Adekanbi Lekan, the couple’s driver; Odetola Ahmed; and Adeniyi Waheed were found guilty of multiple charges, including conspiracy to commit armed robbery, murder, and arson.
Justice Basirat Adebowale, while delivering her judgment, which lasted over three hours on Monday, ruled that the prosecution had proven its case beyond a reasonable doubt.
The judge described the crime as gruesome and held that the convicts did not deserve mercy. She sentenced them to death by hanging or lethal injection, life imprisonment with hard labor, and additional prison terms ranging up to 14 years.
“The sentence of this court on Adekambi Lekan in respect of count II is that he be hanged by the neck until you’re dead or by lethal injection,” Justice Adebowale ruled, adding, “May God have mercy on your soul.”
Lekan’s wife, Fadairo Temitope, was also convicted and sentenced to four years in prison for aiding the crime. His mother, Adekanbi Adenike, received a one-year jail term.
The tragic incident occurred after the Fatinoye family had attended a crossover service at Christ Anglican Church, Iporo-Ake, Abeokuta, on December 31, 2022. Upon returning home, they were ambushed by their assailants.
The couple was murdered, and their corpses were set on fire.
Their son, Oreoluwa, and an adopted son, Olorunyomi Felix, were bound with ropes and thrown into the Ogun River. While Felix managed to survive, Oreoluwa was not as fortunate.
The court’s ruling brings closure to a case that shocked the community and highlighted the dangers of betrayal from trusted individuals.
