Ibadan Malimbe: All To Know About A Rare Bird Found Only In Ibadan, Southwest Of Nigeria

The Ibadan Malimbe is a rare and endangered bird species found only in the southwestern region of Nigeria, particularly in and around Ibadan, Oyo State.

This bird belongs to the weaver family and is known for its distinctive brilliant red and black feathers.

The Ibadan Malimbe’s botanical name is Malimbus ibadanensis.

The male Ibadan Malimbe has a scarlet head, neck, throat, and breast, while the female has red confined to its crown and nape with a thin, red breast-band.

Unfortunately, the Ibadan Malimbe is facing severe threats due to habitat loss and fragmentation, mainly caused by widespread deforestation and forest clearance for subsistence agriculture and logging.

Its population is estimated to have declined by 66% since the 1970s, with only around 2,469 individuals remaining in the wild.

Conservation efforts are underway to protect the Ibadan Malimbe and its habitat.

These efforts include conducting further population surveys, monitoring forest clearance and degradation, and identifying habitat requirements for feeding and breeding.
