The Lagos State Traffic Management Agency (LASTMA) has apprehended a ‘one-chance’ driver operating with a commercial bus in Lagos.
‘One-chance’ is commonly used in Nigeria to refer to fraud or scam and also when a group of criminals picks up passengers waiting for a taxi or bus, to rob or defraud them.
According to Adebayo Taofiq, LASTMA Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, the arrest occurred near a Conoil filling station along Funsho Williams Avenue in Surulere after a female passenger, Miss Bibian Emelifonwu, fell victim to the criminals this morning.
Emelifonwu, who had boarded the bus, recounted how she was seated next to a male passenger who deceitfully stole her phone from her bag while pretending to open the front door.
Once the phone was taken, the criminals ejected her from the moving vehicle onto the highway. Fortunately, LASTMA officers observed the incident and quickly pursued the bus.
The driver, Mr. Toyib Ogunjobi, was apprehended while his accomplices escaped.
During interrogation, Ogunjobi confessed to leading the syndicate, revealing their modus operandi of offering low fares to passengers on the Costain-Ojota route before robbing them and ejecting them from the bus.
The syndicate generated between ₦250,000 and ₦300,000 daily by selling stolen phones and valuables.
Seven stolen phones, including models such as Techno Pop, Samsung AZZ, and Intel A623, were recovered from Ogunjobi. He also identified the bus owner as an accomplice in the operation.
LASTMA’s General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, commended the officers for their swift action. He urged residents to be vigilant when boarding both commercial and private vehicles.
The arrested driver will be handed over to law enforcement agencies for further investigation and prosecution.
