Oke-Ite Money Ritual Has Taken Over Igbo Land – Leader Of Anambra Native Doctors Lament

Dr. Ramaz Okoye-Asuzu, a leading Traditional Native Doctor in Anambra State, has raised concerns over the widespread practice of money rituals, locally known as Oke-Ite, in the South East region of Nigeria.

According to Asuzu, these rituals have become a significant source of ritual killings in Igbo land, particularly among young people seeking quick wealth.

In his statement, Asuzu criticized the rise of fraudulent individuals who claim to be native doctors or traditional medicine practitioners.

He argued that most of these individuals are charlatans who exploit vulnerable youths, leading them into illegal and dangerous practices. He also pointed out that Oke-Ite rituals, which are associated with the use of human body parts for financial gain, are a violation of Igbo culture and tradition.

The practice of Oke-Ite has become a major concern for the authorities, especially following the increase in ritual killings linked to these rituals.

Last year, Governor Charles Soludo of Anambra State launched an initiative to regulate native doctors by registering practitioners, aiming to curb the rise in violent crimes attributed to these groups. Soludo also noted that many native doctors have been accused of providing charms and protective amulets to criminals involved in killings and kidnappings.

Asuzu emphasized that Oke-Ite is not part of the traditional practices of the Igbo people, calling it a taboo. He lamented that the pursuit of “quick money” has led to the abandonment of the Igbo apprenticeship system, where young people would traditionally learn trades and skills over time.

He also called on Governor Soludo and other leaders in the South East to establish a Council for Traditional Medicine or a Native Doctors Board to help regulate the practice, ensuring that only legitimate practitioners are allowed to operate.

He further mentioned some respected traditional medicine practitioners in the region, such as late Rev Fr Arazu, Ifediomimi in Nnewi, and Ilonze in Agu Awka, whose work could serve as models for proper regulation.

Asuzu urged the government to take swift action to protect the youth and the integrity of traditional medicine in Igbo land.
