20th Calabar Xmas Festival : The Shortcomings, Loopholes And Way Forward

The Calabar Xmas Festival Is Exactly 20 Years this 2024. It’s heartbreaking that after 20 Years of The Calabar Xmas Festival with billions of Cross River tax payers money spent, much has not been achieved.

No Artist from Cross River has hit the national grade from the Calabar Xmas Festival. Hence, making the purpose of the festival is therefore defeated.

This is due to bad Management, lack of professionalism and wrong pegs in the hole, and most of all, the none inclusion of the professional body (PMAN), saddled with the responsibility by Federal Government of Nigeria to administer and regulate Music and Entertainment activities In Nigeria Since 1984.

For example, no artist Of the southern senatorial district origin of Cross River played on the A List or B List Of the Calabar Xmas Festival performances last year.

This was done in total disregard for the local content act and role of law, despite a comprehensive list of artists with specified categories being sent to the Special Adviser to the state Governor on events from the Music Union (PMAN).

Note that the event is hosted in the southern senatorial district, therefore priority must be given to artists from the district first before others.

Also last year, the SA Events aided and abated tax evasion by Musicians and Entertainmenters by turning back on after agreement to deduct 10% from the performance fee of all local artists,
20% from national artists, and 25% from international artists as statutorily provided as performers fees, which should be paid to the union.

Meanwhile, a form was given to all artists to that effect, stating a deduction of 5% Which they read and signed before going on stage.

If these payments were made, the union would have deducted tax and paid to government as statutorily provided in Article 8 EE of the music and entertainment industry bye law.

Way Forward:

1.Incorporate the professional body mandated by the Federal govt of Nigeria (PMAN) to administer and regulate Music and Entertainment of the festival.

2. Scrap the event: To avoid repeating mistakes, without adjusting to the right part, the event maybe scrapped, especially to save cost, if not serving it primary purpose.
