Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has been described as a perfect presidential candidate for the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2027.
A chieftain of the party, Femi Babalola in an interview with Tribune Online in Ibadan on Tuesday, submitted that Makinde has all it takes to right the noticeable wrongs in the country, judging by his achievements in all sectors as the governor of Oyo state.
He submitted that the All Progressives Congress (APC) government at the national level has failed the country.
“The APC is known for failed and empty promises, a testament to prevailing hunger in all the states of the Federation,” he said.
He, however, submitted that what the country needs at this critical moment is a candidate with fresh breath and ideas.
Makinde, according to him, of all the aspiring candidates for the number one position in the country who has all it takes to lead the country.
Babalola stated that Governor Makinde can compete with other top contestants like Peter Obi and emerge as the flagbearer of the party in the 2027 general elections.
He said by 2027, Makinde would have had eight years of experience as governor, which he said is an added advantage for him to contest head-to-head with other big contestants.
“Governor Makinde has performed creditably well, though there may be some deficiencies; nobody in the world can score 100 per cent in governance. I think he has done well compared to past governors,” he said.
Speaking about whether he will contest as governor of the state come 2027, Babalola said, “I’m watching the candidates that are coming out to show interest in contesting for the governor in Oyo State. If I’m not satisfied as a person with the calibre of the candidates, I might be forced to contest in 2027.
“Though it is not on my front burner, I think the state deserves a governor who has deep knowledge of the state after Governor Makinde’s tenure as the governor of the state.
“I will not support candidates that are taking advantage of the system; I will rather support candidates that are beneficial and fair to the party. There are members of the party who have suffered with the party.
“Oyo State is a PDP state right from 2003; there has never been a time when the state has been ruled by a party without coniviance from PDP members.”
Reacting to decision of PDP to zone the 2027 Presidential ticket of the party to South part of the country, the PDP cheiftain said, “If the party felt that the game was to present a southern candidate, it’s good for us, I’m in full support of it, let it be south versus south, we have the strength in the North.”
