The Kwara state Road Traffic Management Authority (KWARTMA) says 18 people have died in a road accident involving a trailer and a mini truck in the Oko-Olowo area of Ilorin west LGA.
Olawuyi Gani, spokesperson of KWARTMA, confirmed the incident in a statement sent to TheCable on Thursday.
Gani said the accident happened on Wednesday when a trailer, carrying cattle and some people, collided with a mini truck at high speed, causing a devastating crash that claimed multiple lives.
“A head-on collision involving a 10-tyre trailer with the inscription TRL014GZ and a mini truck leading to a tragic crash had occurred along the Oko-Olowo expressway in Ilorin West Local Government Area of the State yesterday, the 22nd of January 2025,” the statement reads.
“The incident, which was reported about 3:34 pm, involved a 10-tyre trailer conveying cattle and human beings and another unidentified mini truck that collided at excessive speed, which led to a fatal crash that left many persons and cattle dead.
“The officers of the Kwara State Road Traffic Management Authority (KWARTMA), the FRSC, and the Nigeria police were at the scene of the crash, which had about 18 persons dead while some others were taken to an undisclosed hospital.”
Bamidele Michael, the acting chief executive officer of KWARTMA, commiserated with victims’ families while emphasising the importance of safe driving practices.
Michael added that KWARTMA would collaborate with relevant agencies to ensure road safety, especially for motorists plying the Oko-Olowo/Eyenkorin route.
