Kanyeyachukwu Tagbo-Okeke, a 15-year-old autistic Nigerian boy, is officially the holder of the Guinness World Record (GWR) for the largest painting on a canvas by an individual.
The massive painting, which measures 12,303 square metres, was unveiled at the Eagle Square in Abuja on April 2, which is recognised annually as World Autism Awareness Day.
The event, which featured the formal presentation of the GWR certificate, attracted dignitaries, art enthusiasts, and advocates for autism inclusion.
At the unveiling, Tagbo-Okeke’s father described his achievement as a testament to determination, proving that his goal was possible despite initial doubts.
“Many thought Kanyeyachukwu’s goal was impossible, but he has proven otherwise,” he said.
“This is a celebration for children with autism all over the world, showcasing their incredible talents.”
Also speaking, Hannatu Musawa, minister of art, culture, tourism, and the creative economy, praised Kanye’s success, stating that “it’s not only his achievement but also Nigeria’s”.
“We are here to honor Kanyeyachukwu Tagbo-Okeke, a young Nigerian prodigy, who has shown the world what is possible when passion meets hard work,” she said.
“By breaking this world record, Kanyeyachukwu has not only set a new record but has also demonstrated to us all that age is no barrier to greatness.
“We are not only witnessing the breaking of a world record, but also the triumph of determination, perseverance, and the unrelenting spirit of the Nigerian youth.
“We recognize the unique abilities and potential of individuals with autism and are dedicated to providing opportunities for them to thrive in the creative industries.
“Kanyeyachukwu’s record-breaking artwork, “Impossible is a Myth,” is not only an impressive feat but also a beacon of inspiration for autistic children and individuals around the world.
“His achievement demonstrates that with the right support and opportunities, individuals with autism can excel in their chosen fields.”
On her part, Cristian Munduate, UNICEF Nigeria representative said, “Kanye’s achievement proves that every individual, regardless of ability, has limitless potential. Societies must embrace diversity and create opportunities for all.”
Born in November 2009, Kanye is a young creative artist whose works have graced the walls of several galleries and museums in Nigeria, Europe and other parts of Africa.
In 2018, his art alongside three other Nigerian artists, was featured for the first time at the Opec Fund for International Development (OFID) in Vienna.
Kanye’s feat, which was achieved in November 2024, surpassed the record of 9,652 square meters set by an artist in Qatar.
