12 Nigerians Arrested In Ghana Prost¡tution Crackdown

Ghanaian police have arrested 12 Nigerians following a sting operation targeting a prostitution ring in the New Juaben South Municipality of the Eastern Region.

A Ghanaian news outlet, Modern Ghana, reported that the suspects were apprehended during a raid on a suspected brothel in Dabiasem, a suburb of New Juaben.

According to the report, the operation was triggered by a complaint from a 30-year-old Nigerian woman, Stella Godwill, who alleged that she was trafficked from Nigeria to Ghana by a woman identified as Christabel Simon Monday for the purpose of prostitution.

The complainant reportedly told the police that she was required to meet a daily earnings target of 400 Ghana cedis but was only able to raise 250 cedis on the day of the incident.

She further alleged that she was assaulted by her trafficker and the latter’s boyfriend, identified as Simon Kwarteng, for failing to meet the quota.

Confirming the development, the Municipal Police Commander, Superintendent Ransford Nsiah, said the complaint was received last Sunday.

“We received a complaint from a Nigerian woman who alleged that she had been assaulted by her mistress, commonly referred to as a ‘queen mother’, for failing to meet a daily target of GH¢400,” Nsiah was quoted as saying.

Acting on the report, the police launched investigations and arrested Monday in Dabiasem. Further enquiries led operatives to the suspected brothel in the same area, where 12 additional suspects were arrested. Condoms were reportedly recovered during the operation.

The police also arrested two other suspects — a landlord accused of providing accommodation for the illegal activities and a bouncer allegedly linked to the operation.

“We also arrested a man who converted his house into a brothel and collects GH¢25 daily from the women. In all, about 15 persons, aged between 15 and 32 years, are currently in police custody and will be put before the court,” Nsiah added.

The police later clarified that about 15 suspects, aged between 15 and 31 years, remain in custody pending the conclusion of investigations and arraignment.

Authorities confirmed that one of the suspects is a minor, who has been separated for protection, while arrangements are being made with the Department of Social Welfare.

The Municipal Crime Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police Augustine Kusi Asante, warned landlords against renting out properties for illegal activities, noting that Section 277 of Ghana’s Criminal Offences Act, 1960, criminalises the operation of brothels and prescribes penalties including fines or imprisonment.

He added that the suspects allegedly violated Sections 273, 274 and 277 of the Act, which prohibit prostitution, human trafficking and the operation of brothels.

The police expressed concern over the involvement of minors in commercial sex activities and urged the public to provide credible information to help dismantle trafficking networks and protect vulnerable persons.

Investigations are ongoing as part of broader efforts to curb trafficking and exploitation in the Eastern Region, where previous operations reportedly uncovered syndicates that lured young women from Nigeria with promises of hospitality jobs before forcing them into prostitution.
