100 Days In Office: Oyo NUJ Members Demand Fiscal Clarity Over Land Deal From Akeem Abas-Leadership

As the Akeem Abas-led executive of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Council, marks its first 100 days in office, a growing chorus of voices within the union is calling for a different kind of milestone: a transparent ledger.

At the heart of the brewing tension is a significant land development agreement signed on March 11, 2026, at the Dapo Aderogba Hall of the Press Centre, Iyaganku GRA, Ibadan.

The deal, which handed over a portion of the Press Centre’s land for the construction of a hotel and suites, was initially met with optimism. However, that optimism has been replaced by a persistent question from the rank and file: Where is the money?

While the administration has highlighted its achievements, veteran members and stakeholders argue that true leadership is measured in more than just rhetorics -it is measured in trust.

“We are the watchdogs of society,” noted one member who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

“If we cannot demand a clear account of millions of naira entering our own Union, with what moral authority do we question the government,” he asked rhetorically.

The funds in question, reportedly paid by the new developer as part of the lease agreement, remain a point of contention.

While the signing was public, the subsequent allocation and utilization of the funds have remained, according to critics, shielded from the general congress.

The demand for a breakdown of the developer’s fees isn’t being framed by members as an attack, but as a “sanity check.”

The prevailing sentiment among the council is that the NUJ must be the gold standard for the transparency it preaches to the Nigerian public.

Others argued that asking for a detailed disclosure of the total sum received versus the amount deposited in the union’s official accounts, remained a very simple question that this leadership must answer.

“Whether the funds have been earmarked for specific union debts, infrastructure, or members’ welfare, the Congress reserves the right to know, else the integrity of the so-called “100 Days Report” recently released and without capturing that essence would amount to salient information shrouded in secrecy and would not augur well for the Union.

The insistence that financial reportage must be the backbone of any administrative assessment has informed the rising tide of inquiries, but the leadership has remained largely silent on the specifics of the transaction.

As of the time of this publication, efforts to reach Chairman Akeem Abas for a formal breakdown of the lease proceeds were unsuccessful.

As the administration moves into its second quarter, the eyes of the Oyo State media community remain fixed on the Press Centre.

For many, the next 100 days will not be judged by new bricks and mortar, but by the openness of the union’s books.
